Can garlic be grown in large pots and, if so, when should I plant them? PottyLady, Glenageary, Co Dublin Posted: 21/01/2018

Garlic can be grown in a large pot, if there is no open ground to grow it in, which is preferable.

Place the pot in a sunny place, and make sure to keep the compost nicely moist, feeding every 2 weeks with Miracle Grow or similar.

Growing garlic

I have been growing garlic successfully for years. This year, the garlic grew strongly at first. But, in the last month, it has all wilted and vanished. On either side of the garlic, white and red onions are growing well. . henihan, Dublin, Co Dublin Posted: 05/07/2016

If you planted the garlic cloves last autumn, you could expect the leaves to wither away about now, or onion white rot might be present on the bulbs but has not reached the onions.

Autumn-planted garlic is sprouting

I planted garlic cloves on Oct 18, and now, 3 weeks later, I can see 5cm shoots above the ground. Is this normal? I had somehow thought the cloves were meant to lie dormant over the winter. GreenCanuck, Dublin, Co Dublin Posted: 10/11/2011

The weather has been warm by times and that is the reason. It happens anyway, but probably a bit quicker this autumn.

planting garlic bulbs

How far into the soil should I plant garlic bulbs? sarah123, cobh, Co Cork Posted: 26/09/2011

On light open soil, plant 10cm deep, 5cm on heavier soils.

Is garlic spray able to kill green fly ?

I crush a garlic clove and soaked it in water and used it to spray the pepper plant's , Are the green fly dead or do i repeat spraying? kenneth, Athenry, Co Galway Posted: 15/06/2011

Garlic doesn't kill greenfly as such. People use garlic sprays to deter greenflies on roses.

When a garlic spray is made up to control greenflies, ususally some drops of washing up liquid are added, and it is the liquid soap that dessicates the thin-skinned greenflies.

I intend growing garlic now and wonder if it can be grown in large pots/troughs. What type of compost and or manure can I use. PottyLady, Glenageary, Co Dublin Posted: 14/11/2010

Garlic is best grown in the open soil, planted in October or Jan/Feb. But could be grown in large pots, 5 litre or more.
