Do you know the name of the attached plant I purchased without card? Edelotoole, Tallaght, Posted: 09/10/2016

This si known as braided money plant!

  What is this?

What is this?

Could you please tell me the name of this plant. Are they outdoor or should they be treated as houseplants? There is another one with lavender floor flowers.I've had them out during the summer and they were very happy and flowered heavily. I've now taken them indoors and wonder will they last the winter. They are very thirsty, they droop but spring back to life when watered. Any advice is greatly appreciated. TessL, Courtown Harbour, Co Wexford Posted: 09/10/2016

That is busy lizzie or also called impatiens, an indoor plant, and there are forms that can be used as bedding plants in summer.

I recently moved to a new house and found some of these plants in a shed, all dried out but flowering. The flowers look like yellow pins in a pin cushion. Could you tell me what they are please? Lynn Woodley, Rosscarbery, Co Cork Posted: 28/12/2015

That is Haemanthus albiflos, or white paintbrush, native to South Africa, used here as a house plant, thrives on neglect!

A tall Busy Lizzie with pale watery stems, can you give me a name for this plant please? Buggs, Roundwood, Co Wicklow Posted: 05/12/2011

If this is a house plant, it is probably Impatiens hawkeri or a hybrid of it.

If it is outdoors, it is Impatiens glandulifera, the Himalayan balsam.

Umbrella Plant

I have a 20 year old umbrella plant that has taken over an entire side of a bedroom! The top has now hit ceiling and bent over by about three feet. It has seven branches already coming out from the base. The main stem looks like the bark of a tree as it has turned brown. I need to prune it and wonder can this be done. I would also like to know if this plant could grown safely outdoors? p4g4, Lusk, Co Dublin Posted: 31/07/2011

Umbrella plant or schefflera can grow quite large, and can be cut back hard. But this is best done at the start of the growing season.

Just cut away as much as needed and keep it watered and liquid fed.

It is killed by frost outdoors.
