Life Back in the Garden in January

We usually think of January, as the cold month. However we see life coming back in the first month of the year. Recently, as every year I have noticed plants showing flowers. We usually think of the snowdrops but also we see flowering types of shrub like Jasmine and Viburnum and there are others. I have noticed these in my garden and of course they are not affected by the low temperatures. Perhaps it is due to the fact that the days are getting longer. Around January 6 we often speak of the cock step meaning that we now notice the increase in the length of the days. The heathers which will do well in the limestone soils as is the case around Carlow, this area, and many other parts of the country, Erica in other words, are thriving and of course the Hellebores. So we may say the spring is on the way. I have bought my first packet of Tomato seeds and they should be sown very soon.

You are a bit late, Dick. Don't you usually start tomatoes on January 1st? But knowing you, and all your tricks, I'm sure you will soon catch up. Hope you are keeping well.

Still Peter, I think I am ahead of the others.

Viburnums are beautiful at this time of year. Paddy was on the road to Dublin today, Dick and he had to turn back in Kilkenny as the fog was so bad, so it must have been dreadful around Carlow.

Sorry to hear this, Mary. Ii was driving between 9 and 10a.m. and it wasn't bad. I live about 2 miles from the centre of the town, near the Dublin Road. I didn't approach the town later on. I would say that along the Barrow, it would be bad. i didn't spend much time outside, just enough to take the photos and feed the robin. He comes along when he sees me.

True Jackie, of course the roses are difficult to find but this is thetime when I begin the pruning. It is also the time when we think of growing plants indoor from seed.
